Ultra-resilient drone communications

Uninterrupted missions. Human always in the loop.

Flybionic builds ultra-resilient drone communication software. Easy to integrate into any drone, easy to operate over any IP network, including cellular. Already used by OEMs. Already proven in emergency services response.

How it works

Software that makes sessions seamless.

Mobile networks stutter, especially at altitude and over long distances. Many systems treat a short dropout as a link failure and hand control to the aircraft's safety logic. Flybionic is built for exactly these conditions: it keeps the session alive through short interruptions and restores it within moments – so the operator stays connected and the mission continues.

  1. Inside the drone

The Flybionic software runs on a small companion computer with a 4G/5G modem on board the aircraft. Just one modem required (conventional solutions use several).

  2. Across any IP network

Command & control and live video stream run on any IP-based network, for example, 4G/5G, satellite, and tactical radios. End-to-end encryption.

  3. Operational flexibility

The pilot in command works from any internet-connected computer. If the network stutters, the session is restored within moments – before the aircraft's safety logic needs to step in.

For drone manufacturers (OEMs)

An ultra-resilient comms solution, easily integrated into your aircraft

To enable flight beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) you need a highly reliable comms link. Based on several years of deep-tech R&D at Fraunhofer HHI (Berlin), Flybionic has developed a game-changing software-defined product for drone communication. You can focus on what you know best: your aircraft.

  • Straight-forward software licensing – no hardware development work required at your side if companion computer and modem already on-board.
  • Software and hardware are aircraft-agnostic. (Linux-based companion compute; MAVLink-interface to flight controller.)
  • Validated in the field in emergency services and medical logistics – in Germany, Japan, and Malawi.

Get incident information before arriving on-site

We operate a unique drone service for first responders: A fast ultra-light drone, using our ultra-resilient comms, enabling safe flight over urban areas.

  • Aircraft launches on alarm
  • Remote piloting by Flybionic, no in-house pilots or aircraft required
  • Streams live video to the command centre, data stays on German infrastructure
  • Gives incident response commander an early assessment opportunity

Deployments

Deployed in use cases where mission failure is not an option

Three deployments on three continents.

Emergency services · Germany

Pilot with the Potsdam fire department

Drone reconnaissance for the Feuerwehr Potsdam: the aircraft delivers a live picture of the incident so commanders can assess severity before crews arrive. Operated remotely by Flybionic as a service.

Medical logistics · Japan

Medical deliveries to remote islands

Delivery drones supplying medical goods to remote islands in Japan fly with the Flybionic link. Our software is already integrated into the aircraft of a tier one German drone manufacturer, and is in daily service.

Remote operations · Malawi

Drone in Malawi, pilot in Berlin

Drone operations in Malawi, remotely piloted from Berlin – roughly 7,500 km away over public mobile networks. In this trial the Flybionic link achieved a measured reliability of 99.8 %, compared with about 60 % for the connectivity solution previously used in the same setup.

Where we are heading

One ultra-resilient communication solution – for any manufacturer.

Digital wireless communication is a science in its own right, especially when using 4G/5G. Without a deep understanding of the technology, there are many pitfalls. Flybionic enables drone manufacturers to focus on what they know best: their aircraft. Our goal is to provide an ultra-resilient communication system that any manufacturer can easily integrate into their own aircraft.

Founders

Deep-tech from Berlin. Years in the making.

Flybionic grew out of years of research at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, followed by years of field testing on the complete system – protocol, on-board software and radio hardware solved as one.

Founder

Tom Piechotta

Chief Executive Officer

Tom invented the Flybionic protocol during eight years of deep-tech research at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. He wrote the software that flies today – on board, on the server and in the operator's stack.
